As a recent East Carolina University graduate, and now Greenville resident, I couldn't be more proud of where I chose to spend my college years. ECU has given me the opportunity to embrace professional and social accomplishments that will follow me anywhere I go! ECU has not only equipped me with the tools I need to succeed professionally, but it’s also given me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

One of the elements that stood out most during my time here was the university’s commitment to preparing students for real-world success. With strong programs in STEM, business, and education, ECU ensures students have access to skills desirable in any career paths and the required internships really push you to gain that crucial hands-on experience.

But beyond the academics, it's the culture that makes ECU special. The best part about ECU? Without a doubt, it's the people. From classmates to professors, everyone is down-to-earth, supportive, and genuinely invested in your success inside and outside the classroom. Whether it’s the laid-back vibe of the campus or the legendary superstition about not stepping under the cupola (or you won't graduate, don't risk it), the sense of community and Pirate pride is real. You can feel it in the crowd of returning Pirates in the Alumni Tailgating lot outside of Dowdy-Ficken on a late summer afternoon. You’ll bleed purple and gold as you hear a stranger chant to you, “Roll Pirates!” as they tip their familiar baseball cap to you — a sign of bond like no other.

FOOD

If you ever find yourself in Greenville, do yourself a favor and come hungry. This city is full of southern charm and might be best known for its college spirit, but it's the food that’ll leave a lasting impression. From historic barbecue joints to hidden gems serving up creative comfort food, Greenville has built a local flavor scene that’s hard to beat. Here are just a few places that capture the soul of this city, one bite at a time.

Luna Pizza Café is where Neapolitan pizza meets a cool, unique vibe that keeps you coming back. Whether you're in the mood for a classic Margherita pizza or artisanal pasta dish like ‘The Canon’, Luna’s has got your cravings covered. Their fresh ingredients, attention to detail, and welcoming staff make you feel like you’ve stepped across the pond to a night out in Italy.

Fun Fact: Luna’s is owned by a retired ECU Recreation & Leisure Studies professor who traveled to Florence, Italy to study how to make the best authentic Italian pizza possible and brought that knowledge back here to Greenville!

When you're craving something iconic, Sup Dogs is the place to go. It's more than just a place to grab a dog, it's a whole experience. With creative hot dog combinations, juicy burgers, and an electric atmosphere, Sup Dogs is the kind of spot where food and fun collide. With being named Barstool Sports Best Bar in America 3x, it's no wonder why it’s a favorite for students and locals alike! Make sure you stay refreshed with one of their famous Sup Crushes!

Cubbies has been a Greenville staple since 1985. With a simple menu of burgers, sandwiches, and fries cooked up just like your southern Granny’s recipe, this place keeps things classic, casual, and consistently delicious. It’s the kind of local treasure that makes you nostalgic even if it’s your first bite.

The Greenville food scene wouldn’t be complete without mentioning B’s Barbecue. You’ll know you’re close when you see the smoke and smell the slow-cooked perfection. B’s doesn’t need fancy decor, a huge menu, or even a website. They just do barbecue right: tender pork, rich sauce, and that unbeatable flavor. It’s no wonder folks line up early – and they sell out fast and close up for the day when they do!

COMMUNITY

Greenville is so much more than a bustling college town! This city is teeming with events around every corner complete with engagements for any age! While ECU brings students to the city, many stay for the culture, connections, and countless events that make Greenville feel like home. From Sup Dog’s famed Doggie Jams and lively summer festivals, to the highly awaited Pirate Fest that celebrates both ECU pride and Greenville spirit, Greenville offers something for everyone. The city keeps families and residents engaged with various camps, workshops, and entertainment long after the school year ends to prove it's a well-rounded community that thrives outside the university. With its growing arts scene including public murals, museums, and the First Friday Art Walk, plus a local love for ECU that never fades, Greenville offers a perfect blend of tradition and creativity. It’s no surprise the city was recently named one of Livability’s Top 100 Places to Live in the US – a first-time honor that highlights what locals have always known: Greenville is a place to grow, connect, and truly belong.

Both Greenville and ECU have nestled in a corner of my heart that I am proud to call my home. As I reflect on my time as a student, I’ve learned to love Greenville as a city too.

And as Jimmy Buffet once sang, “Yes, I am a Pirate.”
