PADDLE THE TAR RIVER

Easily accessible from the new 360 acre Wildwood Park and several other launch points, the river offers a peaceful ride bordered by dense greenery and occasional glimpses of local wildlife. It's ideal for both beginners and experienced paddlers. Glide past lush trees, spot a heron fishing along the bank, and enjoy a tranquil slice of nature just minutes from Downtown Greenville. Kayak and canoe rentals with Riverside Recreation and Kneedeep Adventures, are available seasonally, and morning and evening trips tend to offer the most serene conditions.

PARKS AND RECREATION

One of Greenville’s crown jewels, River Park North spans 324 acres of forest, fields, and water along the Tar River. This natural sanctuary is ideal for anyone looking to camp, hike, fish, paddle, or simply relax in a quiet, verdant environment. The park is complete with:

5 ponds and 2 fishing piers

Rental fishing boats and pedal boats (seasonal)

Traditional and drive-in campsites

3 miles of hiking trails

Picnic shelters, grills, and over 40 picnic tables

Sand volleyball court and a fossil pit for kids

Wildlife observation platforms

The Walter L. Stasavich Science and Nature Center, located on-site, is a highlight for families and curious minds. It features a 10,000-gallon freshwater aquarium, a turtle touch tank, live reptiles, and interactive exhibits focused on Eastern North Carolina's ecosystems. Birdwatchers will love that River Park North is listed on the North Carolina Birding Trail. You might catch sight of Bald Eagles and Ospreys soaring above or spot colorful species like the Yellowthroat, Indigo Bunting, and Blue Grosbeak. The lakes attract wading birds and other wildlife making it a prime, year-round destination for wildlife observation.

Complete with a 1.5 mile long hiking trail, Wildwood Park is home to waterfront campgrounds, sandy beach kayak launch points, and lush grasslands with picnic pavilions. The park offers a wide range of trails for all types of adventurers whether you're taking a stroll around the lake on their natural surface trail, exploring the accessible boardwalk, or hitting the mountain biking trails that wind through the park. Cyclists of any age will love the new bicycle skills course and pump track even complete with a lower impact strider course for younger kids or beginner bicyclists. In addition to the trails, the park features various fishing docks, camping platforms, a floating dock with three boat slips, sandy beach areas, and 131 parking spaces. You can even take a guided or self-guided kayak paddling tour around Wildwood Park's Barber Lake, which connects to the Tar River! There's also a visitor center with restrooms a playground, and picnic shelters, making it an ideal spot for outdoor family or community gatherings. A WEEKEND GETAWAY

If you're planning a weekend getaway focused on reconnecting with nature, Greenville has you covered. Start your Saturday with a paddle on the Tar River, followed by an afternoon exploring Wildwood Park’s trails, fishing docks, and mountain biking tracks. Pack a picnic to enjoy at the Greenville Town Common, where open lawns and riverside views make for the perfect lunch spot. On Sunday, take a slow morning walk through River Park North, and then wind down with a peaceful afternoon at the Greenville Toyota Amphitheater  at a local music event like, Concert on the Common or Sunday in the Park. It's a weekend full of greenery, wildlife, and fresh air, without ever leaving the city.
