Dr. Marylaura Papalas (ECU Foreign Languages & Literatures) will present “Fashioning Interwar Womanhood: Elsa Schiaparelli in Transatlantic Literature and Media” as part of Gender to a Tea January 19, 2022 (1 pm, WebEx).Dr. Papalas will discuss her upcoming monograph on fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who made her career in Paris between the two World Wars. Referenced by a diverse range of authors - including Louis MacNeice, Clarisse Francillon, Aldous Huxley Dawn Powell, and Mary McCarthy - and filmmakers - including A. Edward Sutherland, Marcel Carné, Robert Bresson, and John Huston - the Schiaparelli brand dressed fictional characters as well as real-life celebrities in fashion magazines and personal memoirs. This talk will discuss some of the women who wore and desired Schiaparelli clothing and will examine the transatlantic network linking popular print media, film, literature and autobiography that helped to disseminate her unique vision of 1930s womanhood and ultimately play a role in the public’s negotiation of modernity and female identity.--Gender to a Tea is a speakers’ series designed to help gender-focused researchers by fielding questions from attendees about the presenters’ ongoing, unpublished research. The series – which is free and open to the public – is co-sponsored by the Gender Studies Program, Gender Studies Executive Board, and Harriot College of Arts and Sciences.
