We are continuing to celebrate Emerge’s 20th year with events and exhibitions that have made Emerge what it is today. In 2002, local artist Vik Sexton approached Holly Garriott with the exhibition idea of a Barbie Show. The exhibition, aptly titled “30 Odd Barbies” included artistic interpretations of the iconic toy and collector’s item. The first Barbie Show was exhibited in the back hallway and satellite pottery studio. Can you imagine? That show was a fundraiser for the Pitt County School Art Teachers. In subsequent years, the size of the exhibition grew, and the funds helped grow the outreach programs Emerge hosts today. The Odd Barbie is where the iconic doll of American pop culture is cut up, glued down, juxtaposed with all sorts of objects, and transformed in a new mode of self-expression. As the world’s best-known blonde, a need to change is inevitable. This year we will have Odd Barbies in both gallery spaces and will be auctioning off each one from November 5-18.
